Let’s take a closer look at the current offers across all of Marriott’s cards to see which one makes the most sense for you.

Current Marriott welcome offers

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card

Marriot Bonvoy Amex Brilliant 10
THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $450 (see rates and fees).

Welcome offer: 75,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after you spend $3,000 in your first three months of card membership.

Is it worth it?

75,000 points are worth $630, according to TPG valuations. However, the main value of holding this card comes if you stay at Marriott properties on a somewhat regular basis.

That’s because the card confers valuable perks, including automatic Bonvoy Gold status, an annual free night award (worth up to 50,000 points), up to $300 in annual statement credits for eligible Marriott purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program*, Priority Pass lounge access, 15 elite qualifying night credits per year and so much more. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

*Note that effective Sept. 22, 2022, the $300 Marriott Bonvoy statement credit benefit will be replaced with up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year (up to $25 per month) for eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide.

Just remember that Marriott recently eliminated award charts, so you may need to work harder to find a property at which to use these free nights. However, you can now top up all Marriott certificates using up to 15,000 points.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless 3 CCSL
JOHN GRIBBEN/THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $95.

Sign-up bonus: Earn three free nights (each night valued at up to 50,000 points) after you spend $3,000 on purchases in your first three months from account opening.

Is it worth it?

The current welcome offer on the Boundless card doesn’t award points. Instead, you’ll earn three free night awards, with each one worth up to 50,000 points.

If you can fully maximize them, TPG’s valuations peg 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at $1,260. And since Marriott now allows you to top off free nights with up to 15,000 points, you could use this bonus to book three nights at up to 65,000 points per night (though stays booked using Marriott certificates aren’t eligible for a fifth night free).

If you’re a frequent traveler loyal to Marriott, this is a great card to add to your wallet without a huge price tag. With the Marriott Boundless, you’re getting a sizable list of perks, including automatic Bonvoy Silver status as well as 15 elite qualifying nights every year. In addition, you’ll earn one credit toward the next level of elite status for every $5,000 in spend, but you can also reach Gold Elite status simply by spending $35,000 on the card in a calendar year.

Perhaps the most valuable perk is the annual free night award (worth up to 35,000 points) at each account anniversary — though again, Marriott’s lack of award charts could hinder your ability to use this reward.

When it comes to earning rewards on the card, you’ll earn the following:

  • 6 points per dollar on Marriott purchases (a 4.8% return based on TPG’s valuations).
  • 3 points per dollar on gas, grocery stores and dining on the first $6,000 spent each year (2.4%).
  • 2 points per dollar on all other eligible purchases (1.6%).

Sign-up bonus: Earn 30,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in your first three months from account opening.

Is it worth it?

The 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points alone are worth $252, but the card also comes with 15 elite night credits annually (putting you at automatic Silver Elite status) and has no foreign transaction fees.

You’ll earn 3 points per dollar at Marriott properties, 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases and 1 point per dollar everywhere else.

Overall, this is a solid set of perks for a card with no annual fee. However, more frequent Marriott guests would likely be better off springing for either of the higher-tier options.

Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card

Marriot Bonvoy Business Montreal August 2019 1
ISABELLE RAPHAEL/THE POINTS GUY

Annual fee: $125 (see rates and fees).

Welcome offer: Earn 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new card to make $5,000 in eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership. Offer expires Aug. 31, 2022.

Is it worth it?

If you qualify for a small-business credit card, this current offer has the potential to be quite lucrative. The 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points is an enticing offer worth $1,050.

This card recently added new benefits without an increase in the annual fee. You’ll now get automatic Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy, unlocking 25% bonus points on paid stays, late checkout, premium internet, a welcome gift of points on each stay and room upgrades (based on availability at check-in). Additionally, you’ll receive a 7% discount on rooms booked directly with Marriott, as well as earn 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants both in the U.S. (no change in this benefit) and now worldwide (an effective doubling of the earn rate).

The card also comes with 15 elite night credits annually (which can be stacked with a Marriott Bonvoy consumer card) and a free night award annually (worth up to 35,000 points). In addition, a second free night (also worth up to 35,000 points) can be earned after you spend $60,000 in purchases on your card in a calendar year.

As noted earlier, Marriott’s recent shift to dynamic pricing may make it harder to use these rewards, but you should be able to find a participating property that can cover your annual fee (and then some), as our data indicates that there’s still a lot of value in the program.

Other benefits include premium on-property internet access and no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees).

Can you apply for more than one Marriott card offer?

Westin Anaheim Resort Marriott

If multiple Marriott card offers are intriguing to you, you can indeed have more than one open Marriott card — some people in TPG’s office have two or three. It can make sense to leverage the annual anniversary award nights and to stack the 15 elite nights awarded by carrying both a personal and small-business Marriott card.

However, with four total Marriott cards currently available for new applicants, there are a fair number of restrictions on who can earn the sign-up bonuses across the available cards — especially since you’re working across two different issuers with Amex and Chase.

To give a specific example, if you have the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex card for your small business spending but decide you want to jump on the Bonvoy Brilliant Amex card for its welcome offer and perks, you could theoretically have both of those cards and their bonuses.

Note that these restrictions are all in addition to Chase’s 5/24 rule (which applies to new applicants of the Bonvoy Boundless and Bonvoy Bold cards) and Amex’s one-bonus-per-lifetime rule (which applies to new applicants of the Bonvoy Brilliant and the Bonvoy Business cards).

So, you’ll want to make sure you’re eligible for these offers before applying.

Bottom line

Marriott cards hold slots in our top hotel credit cards list due to the value they provide year after year. Add in some of the current bonuses — especially on the Business card — and you’ve got a compelling reason to consider getting a Marriott card now.
